SOLUTIONS FOR FARMERS
FRONTIER IMPACT Group HAS BEEN WORKING WITH FARMERS ON THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME
How can we help?

Frontier Impact Group provides tailored solutions to help your farm and business thrive, while delivering environmental outcomes.

We can assist with issues affecting you, including:

  - Advice on sustainable farming techniques

  - Options for energy generation and storage

  - Advice about plant and equipment

Solar solutions

The are many new technologies for farmers to consider that can save farmers a lot on costs and help them become more sustainable. Although solar PV system installations are most comment, there are many other opportunities that need to be considered on a case by case basis.  All the technologies Frontier Impact Group works with have been commercially proven, reduce farm costs, and can generate further income in certain instances.

So how do you rate as a sustainable farmer?

  1. Solar PV and battery storage to provide energy all hours of the day

  2. Demand management metering systems. Optimising use of energy and energy cost

  3. Vertical fodder systems. New technology to Australia but can produce feed at a known quality and competitive price regardless of weather

  4. Voltage control systems. Improving the efficiency of systems

  5. Other energy systems such as bio-digesters that use organic farm waste to produce energy. Tend to be expensive but do work in certain circumstances

  6. Carbon credits through revegetation, soil carbon, regenerative farming and other land management practices

  7. Smart Farming IT systems – there are many farm management systems that can increase yields, manage fertilizers and improve farm productivity combined with improving environmental outcomes

  8. Electric vehicles and equipment

To make a big difference in the opportunities for farmers to improve we need to try new things. We are seeing farmers identifying the advantage of emerging smart farming technologies and we are working with some in Northern Queensland who can not only improve farm productivity and profitability but also reduce leaching into the great barrier reef! How great is that?

The availability of animal feed vertical farming systems is another emerging area. With a system that uses 98 % less water than traditional irrigated land systems what an impact this could have on building drought resilience!

Call for Action

  1. If you are at the earlier stage of exploring sustainable solutions and would like to explore solar opportunities, please see our tips for solar farms. If you are interested to explore, we are happy to help

  2. If you are one of the many innovative farmers and would like to explore any of the technologies above drop us a line on inquiries@frontierimpact.com.au

There are many stories of unfortunate outcomes where a farmer thought the solar PV system would provide electricity when he is milking his cows early in the morning, but it doesn’t! It is always important to consider when you are using your electricity and when you will be generating electricity in order to evaluate the best option. Solar PV can still be a viable option but make sure you procure the right solar PV technology to ensure that you are taking all aspects into account.  Some key issues to consider:

  1. Technology choice

  2. PV Systems Size

  3. Initial pre-feasibility

  4. Site Selection

  5. Solar Technology provider

  6. Network connection

  7. Permitting

  8. Budget and Return

  9. Funding

  10. Electricity sales

Green feed solution

Highlights + Benefits

The Greenfeed Vertical Farming System has demonstrated the key benefits detailed below:

  • Proven to provide a steady, cost competitive and reliable supply 365 days per year

  • Healthier livestock delivering improved farm productivity and livestock quality

  • Increased resilience to droughts delivering improved financial results

  • Proven to reduce water consumption by 98% (drought proofing)

  • Minimal use of land (reduces farm footprint)

  • Reduced growth feed time

  • Minimal labor requirements and cost

  • Organically grown, no fertilizers or insecticides (chemical free)

  • Disease, mold and dust free

  • Enhanced nutritional value (21% protein) with improved 98 % digestibility

  • Quick rate of return (between 1 – 3 years)

Why is our GreenFeed growing system leading?

  • Over 300 proven Greenfeed systems in operation, currently supplying feed to beef cattle, dairy cows, sheep, goats, horses, zoos and chickens

  • Greenfeed was established by Nick Kemp in South Africa to provide feed to his own farm to survive the severe drought conditions during 2005.  Greenfeed has since expanded into Canada and now into Australia

  • A commercial vertical farm employing aeroponics, the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment, and a sophisticated Controlled Environment Agriculture System (CEAS) to provide an optimal growing microclimate all year round

  • Options of a Semi Automated Grow Room Unit or a Fully Automated Grow Room Unit

  • The environmental control system can be programmed for a diverse range of crops

  • Specifically designed as a highly energy efficiency system to minimize energy costs in any climatic conditions

The key features of the Fully Automated Grow Room Unit include:

  • The production capacity ranges from 14 to 200 metric tons per day

  • A custom designed building based on your specifications and requirements

  • Only water, electrical power connection and seed are required to make the unit operational

Benefits of producing sprouted fodder using Aeroponics

  • The rapid and consistent year-round production of fresh sprouted fodder

  • Production is not impacted by climatic conditions, droughts or pests

  • Daily harvesting reduces farming, harvesting and storage costs

  • The naturally grown sprouted fodder has no antibiotics, hormones, pesticides or herbicides

  • A financially viable solution for farms with poor or no grazing that rely heavily on rainfall

  • Increases stocking capacity (farm productivity)

  • Drought risk reduction - Increased availability, reduced and stable feed costs (under $100/ton)

Benefits to animals

  • Fresh sprouted fodder is highly palatable and nutritious for ruminants and monogastrics

  • A mixed feed (not a mono culture) can be grown for particular animal diets (maximum weight)

  • Increases digestibility of nutrients (98% digested compared with approximately 55% for grains)

  • Improves general fertility, conception rates and reproductive capacity

  • Improves appearance of coat or fleece

  • Eliminates the digestive and metabolic problems in ruminants that are fed a grain-based diet

  • Improves general animal health and disease resistance, which reduces animal veterinary care

  • Sprouted fodder is dust free, which greatly reduces occurrence of respiratory conditions

  • Increases newborn survival rate

  • Maximum performance is achieved on less protein due to better assimilation and digestibility

  • An alkalizing effect on the body, detoxifies the blood and strengthens the liver (Shipard 2005)
